Learning by doing
Experiential learning is taking advantage of “hands-on” learning opportunities outside of the classroom. While taking classes is a great way to learn at the University of Florida, we are proud of the many opportunities students have to gain invaluable experience in unique and exciting ways. This includes studying abroad, immersion courses, participating in undergraduate research, and taking part in internships. In the Biology department we are working to make sure that students are able to take advantage of these opportunities and develop their undergraduate experience.
Why is Experiential Learning important?
Students learn in a variety of ways, and engaging in stimulating and interdisciplinary activities can help you become a more well-rounded, engaged UF graduate. Students have the opportunity to gain career experience with undergraduate research and internships and experience other cultures with study abroad and exchange opportunities. These experiences broaden your perspective and awareness and can help you reach the goals you have set.
How do you use your experiences?
Dr. David Kolb, an educational theorist focusing on experiential learning, noted “knowledge results from the combination of grasping experience and transforming it.” Students who utilize experiential learning have the opportunity to transform their experiences into knowledge that sets them apart. How do you show what you’re learned? Students are encouraged to take time to reflect and consider how they have grown: enhancing team work, developing plans of action, seeing the advantages and disadvantages of the way other cultures live, and learning to adapt to unique situations.
